This project was completed in July 2017 for Stephanie Debou, a yoga, meditation, and movement teacher based in Toronto, Ontario.
Stephanie worked for years in the corporate world and came to me after quitting her job and diving into yoga teaching. She discovered her passion for yoga, meditation, and wellness and wanted to build a website and brand to promote her offerings. She wanted to bring in individuals and corporations interested in investing in their own or their employees physical and mental well being. She chose the name SDB yoga because it stands for her name, but also Sukha Deha Bharata which means Happy Body, Shining Soul.
Stephanie was inspired by yellow and it’s warmth and association with Sun energy and the Solar Plexus chakra – our personal power chakra. She knew that she wanted it as part of her brand. The blue was inspired by a robin’s egg – a symbol of spring, renewal, rebirth and wholeness. It also represented the Throat chakra colour, which encourages us to speak our truth. It was important to Stephanie to have a symbol for meditation in her logo as often in our Western version of Yoga we focus on the physical movements, forgetting that meditation is as an important part of the yogic path.
I drew from Stephanie’s love of yellow and her commitment to meditation, and created a logo based on the flow of a single line. Stephanie immediately loved the logo, and we spent a few rounds of revisions perfecting the colour scheme. Stephanie loved the logo because of all the interpretations that were available with in. It symbolized the infinite nature of Prana (energy), movement and stillness all in one continuous, elegant line. It also took a natural shape of a pregnant women and would lend itself well to the pre-natal yoga practice Stephanie teaches as well. Ultimately we ended up with a strong brand focused around bright colours and individual interpretations that could speak to every persons unique yoga practice.
